Bette Lou Laney

Obituary of Bette Lou Goble Laney

Bette Lou Laney, age 91, passed away peacefully on Monday May 20, 2024 with her family by her side. Throughout her life, Bette was a faithful servant, leading with her faith and trust in the Lord. She cared deeply and served selflessly, looking after her family, friends and those she cared for through work. She was a people person and loved sharing her stories, wisdom, the history of Charlotte and learning about others.

Bette was born in Lenoir, North Carolina on November 17, 1932 to Marshall and Thelma Goble. She spent her childhood involved in church, with family and enjoying caring for her younger siblings. She met the love of her life of 58 years, Bill Laney and they married and built a beautiful family of four children, Michael, Jeffery, John and Elizabeth. They raised their family in Charlotte, NC in the same house she lived in up until her passing. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church since the age of 15 and was a very active member up until her health made it hard to attend church. Yet, she watched on television every week for the last several years.

She held many jobs during her life and cherished her time as a librarian assistant at Nations Ford Elementary, up until her retirement. She cherished the staff, who got lunch monthly for many years after. Her pride and joy was being a mother to four children and Nana to four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was the heartbeat of the family hosting many gatherings, holidays, sleepovers and being the one to go to for advice, a hug or listening ear. She led her family to know Jesus and live a Christ-driven life. She was an amazing southern cook, taught her family to love the beach, to care for one another and their community and she could chat your ear off on the phone or in person. She will be dearly missed, but knew that she would be greeted in heaven by many loved ones and be told she was a good and faithful servant.

She was preceded in death my her parents, Marshall and Thelma Goble. Her husband, Bill Laney, her son John Laney, her granddaughter Lindsey Laney, her daughter-in-law, Janet Laney and sister, Bobbie Mears. She is survived by her sons and daughter, Michael Laney (Susan), Jeff Laney (Loretta) and Liz Laney. She is survived by her grandchildren Shannon Pressley (Josh), Jessie Nash (Taylor) and Josh Laney. And her great-grandchildren, Stanley Mitchell, Carter Pressley, Emarie Pressley and Mason Nash. And her siblings Gary Goble and Linda Brooks. She will be missed dearly and never forgotten.

A graveside service will be held at 10 AM on Friday, May 24th, 2024, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Memorial Park, 7315 Pleasant Grove Road, Charlotte, NC 28216.
