Obituary of Mary Ann Cathey

Charlotte, North Carolina – Mary Ann Miller Cathey died peacefully in her sleep on May 20, 2024 at Aldersgate Retirement Community. She was born to John S. Miller and Lillian C. Miller in Mecklenburg County in 1928. She graduated from Newell High School and Winthrop College. She earned a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from UNC-Charlotte and was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, a sorority of women educators.

After teaching in public high schools, Mary Ann directed kindergartens at Commonwealth Presbyterian and Third Presbyterian. She also taught first grade for many years at Charlotte Country Day School. Mary Ann expressed her creativity through quilting, sewing, and knitting and teaching children to read.

Both Mary Ann and her late husband, Jack C. Cathey, served for decades as ordained Elders at Third Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, frequently serving as Elder Commissioners to the Presbytery of Charlotte. Mary Ann taught a weekly adult Bible class at the church for many years and led an adult group for prayer and study in her home. She served on the board of the Central Avenue Bilingual Preschool (now the Charlotte Bilingual Preschool) and was active in supporting its founding in 1999 at Third Presbyterian Church.

She volunteered as a docent at the Hezekiah Alexander House and had a love of North Carolina history and folk arts. She was a voracious reader and a gifted storyteller.

Mary Ann was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jack, and her sole sibling, John Sutton Miller II. She is survived by her sons Rev. Dr. Robert A. Cathey (Barbara) of Chicago, IL and Dr. Jack M. Cathey (Anne) of Huntersville, NC, as well as her four adult grandchildren, Laura Cathey Lubinski, Paul Cathey, Joshua Cathey, and Jessica Frank, one great-grandson, Darwin Lubinski, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at Third Presbyterian Church (4019 Central Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28205) on Saturday, June 8 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends at 10:00AM in the sanctuary. The graveside service will be at 2:00 PM at Sharon Memorial Park (5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212). In lieu of flowers, donations to Third Presbyterian Church would be most appreciated.
