Obituary of Stephen Anthony Scherrep

Stephen (Steve) A. Scherrep of Charlotte, NC  (formerly of Roanoke, VA) age 61 died Monday, November 26, 2018 at the Harris Hospice unit of Novant Presbyterian hospital in Charlotte, NC.  Steve was born in Norfolk, VA to Frank and Elizabeth Scherrep, the oldest of their four children.  Steve’s family moved to Roanoke VA during his early grade school years.  During late middle school and high school he focused on taking classes to allow him to meet his goal of becoming a diesel mechanic.  He attended Nashville Auto Diesel College in 1976-1977.

From 1977-1996, he worked in many (if not all) of the diesel shops in the Roanoke Valley.  International Harvester, Southwest Diesel, and Valley Fuel Injection to name just a few. In 1996, he accepted a position with Frito-Lay as a mobile mechanic.  He took care of a large fleet area that extended from Harrisonburg to Danville, VA.  He worked for Frito Lay 21 years, retiring in April 2017.

Steve was a man that cared deeply for his family and friends.  As a teenager, he recognized that life would become very busy after high school so he took time to spend one week with each of his grandmothers. From Constance, his paternal grandmother, he learned to make her delicious homemade Italian bread.  From Dorothy, his maternal grandmother, he learned to make her coveted pound cake.  He cherished this special time greatly.  For years, he would fill the house with the wonderful aromas of baking, particularly at holiday time.  He even used the bread recipe to make mouthwatering pizza, enjoyed by family and friends alike.  Many times, his weekend hours were spent helping family and friends with chores like home and auto repair.

During his high school career, Steve enjoyed playing roller and ice hockey.  Later in life he could be found at the Roanoke Civic Center, cheering for the Roanoke Express when they took to the ice.  Steve really enjoyed music, playing drums in school and in the church folk group.  Some of his fondest memories as a teenager were listening to music with his cousin, David. He had a large music collection that spanned decades and included many genres.
