We all know how theater allows us a fresh perspective, an opportunity to escape, an opportunity to grow and be moved, among other things... because we’ve all obviously BEEN THERE, either as performers, company and crew or audience members. However, there’s a whole ‘nother level, a strata that exists beyond that, on a higher awareness and talent level that is closer to that of a Grand Master... and I’m convinced that is why directors' chairs are taller. They are for giants: those who must grasp the bigger picture before the rest of us can, who can adeptly navigate the different needs and challenges to achieve the near impossible sometimes in a very short amount of time... and most importantly, those who have the ability to bring us all together in order to transform an idea from a dream into a reality.
Michael was one of those giants.
My heart goes out to his family and especially his children. In a sense, I had the privilege of knowing what it was like to be Michael’s child a couple of hours a day for a few years of my life:
I remember embroidering a rose onstage of The Children’s Hour... a show that was an utter mystery to my 9 year old self because 1) no matter how fast I stitched, that rose NEVER was completed!!! (My adult self figured it out: there must’ve been a props master whose task it was to cut and dispose of most of my stitches after EVERY performance!!) and 2) I had no understanding of what the show was about because Michael would send me home to bed after the first act, and no one REALLY explained why Anne Todd Keogh caused the two teachers to get in trouble.
I remember singing “Puttin’ On the Ritz” along with Molly, some other kids, and Frankenstein (!?!) outside the theater for some festival... no idea what THAT was about!
I remember that awkward, awkward emotionally heart wrenching time when I had reached my full 5’9” and yet was still very much in love with being an Annie orphan. And how Michael sensed this, was able to look past my early growth spurt despite my being taller than almost everyone including Miss Hannigan... and cast me in my 3rd and final production of my beloved show.
I remember these gifts and it was all because I was a child for a brief spell to a Benevolent Giant who gave the gift of theater to us all.
Please Rest In Peace, Michael. And may your family find comfort in your memory and the loving memories we all share of you.
-Courtney

“In memories it broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. A part of us went with you when God took you home. In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still, in our hearts you hold a place that will never be filled.”
Love you all and sending a strong pray!

My prayers and love to all your family.
Michael was an essential, inspiring and joyful part of my life for so many years. He kept my passion for the theater shining bright and was one of the most loving, compassionate, spirited supporters of Orlando actors, directors and producers I can remember in all my years as an Orlando resident and creative.
He will always have a place in my heart.
