Howard Tipton, Jr.

Obituary of Howard Wylie Tipton, Jr.

Howard Wylie Tipton, Jr., known as “Tip” to most, loving husband, father, grandfather, dog lover, avid fisherman, white water kayaker, ocean sailor, camper, gardener and nature lover, passed away peacefully at his home with family on April 2, 2019 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Born on Feb. 21, 1952 in Oklahoma, he was raised in Charlotte, NC where he was an athlete and friend to many close lifelong friends. He relocated to Birmingham, AL, Mooresville, NC, and even St. Thomas, USVI before settling back in his home of Charlotte.

A huge part of his enjoyment was his work for many years with the people at CBW Communications Engineers (later MidState/MidSouth). Howard was a very successful Project and Engineer Manager. The family would like to thank the many people at his work past and present who were such an important part of his life.

Howard was a great athlete and lover of the water, winning awards in sailing competitions, kayaking, and spending much of his free time with his dogs out on lakes or the sea fishing. Howard and his wife, Stephanie, spent many happy years together camping, canoeing, going to concerts, on the boat in the water, and attending Carolina Panthers home games.

He was a considerate friend to so many, wonderful Grandpa and Papa to his grandsons, and a loving and kind caretaker to his wife for many years. He adored his mother and younger sister and took great care of them until their deaths in the last few years. His daughters and their families will miss him very much.

He was preceded in death by Howard W. Tipton, Sr. (father); Anne W. Tipton (mother); Mary Ann Tipton (sister); and Alejandro “Alex” Alvarez (grandson). He is survived by daughters Angela Alvarez (Alex Alvarez) and Sunni Speigle (James R. “Rusty” Speigle); grandsons Giovanni Alvarez, Connor Speigle and Cameron Speigle.

The family will be having a private ceremony on water in his honor and ask that any donations be made in his name to Catawba Riverkeeper, 715 N. Church Street, Suite 120, Charlotte, NC 28202.
