Obituary of Virgil Sharpe Hurley

Virgil Sharpe Hurley, 96, of Charlotte, North Carolina passed away Sunday, April 3, 2022. Born in Asheboro, North Carolina November 6, 1925 he was the son of the late George Knox Hurley and Virginia Seward Hurley. 

Virgil spent his childhood living in Montgomery and Stanley County and graduated from Asheboro high school in 1942. After leaving high school he served in U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman during World War II. Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, Virgil moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where he met and married Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Miller on June 26, 1949. Virgil and Betty were faithful members of First United Methodist Church in Charlotte from the time of their marriage until their passing. He served on many boards and committees over the years at First UMC and was head usher for 37 years. Virgil worked for Independent Electric Supply Company for 55 years and retired at the age of 77.  In addition to being actively involved in the church, in later years he was also a member of the North Carolina Train Host Association, which is a part of the North Carolina DOT Rail Division, and a member of the North Carolina Chapter of the National Railway Historic Society. He served in a number of positions over the years including Vice President, President and Board Member Emeritus. Virgil also had a great love of music and was a supporter of the Charlotte Symphony and was a season ticket holder for over 50 years.

Virgil is survived by his daughters: Donna Hurley Scott and her husband, Glenn, of Laurens, SC, and Sybil Hurley Reeves and her husband, Randall, of Charlotte, NC; granddaughters: Karen Elizabeth Davis of Charlotte, NC, Sarah Scott Sharpton and her husband, Daniel, of Lyman, SC, Robin Reeves Sbardella and her husband, Jordan, of Charlotte, NC, and Mary Scott Kinnunen and her husband, Adriel, of Greer, SC; great granddaughters: Danielle Rose Thompson and Ella Marie Thompson; sister-in-law, Barbara Hurley; and many more loving family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Virgil was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Miller Hurley; daughter, Patricia Louise Hurley Davis; and brother, June Alexander Hurley.

Virgil was above all a great dad, granddad and great grandfather and he loved his family dearly.

A family graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, April 11 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery. A Celebration of Life service will follow for all his family and friends at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 at First United Methodist Church, 501 N. Tryon St., Charlotte, NC 28202. Parking is available in the parking deck off of Ninth Street.
